Laurena

Way down up the old plantation
Many years old massa used me as a slave
He had a yellow gal he called Laurena
And we courted where the wild banana’s wave
The moon shone bright on Laurena
As we sat and watched the coons among the corn
The possom played around the wild bananas
And the old owl he hooted like a horn

Oh Laurena Dear Laurena
Won’t you come won’t you come to me again
Oh Laurena Dear Laurena
Won’t you come won’t you come to me again

For three long years weve been courtin
And then we joined together two as one
And with hard labor we suppored massa
And the happiness of life had just begun
But one day old massa sold Laurena
And I though that this poor darkies heart would break
And he sent her far away down to old virgina
And he left me to morn for her sake

For for long years we’ve been parted
And the thoughts of her had never left my head
Till one day massa read me a letter
Telling me that Laurena she was dead
Oh this darky knows her soul has gone to heaven
And no more will she suffer grief and pain
And a bright robe and crown to her will be given
And no more will she wear the darkies chain
