Red River Valley

Oh a long time you know Ive been waiting
For those words which you never did say
Now alas all my found hopes have vanished
For they tell me your going away
From this valley they say you are going
I shall miss your bright eyes and sweet smile
For you also take with you the sunshine
That has brightened my pathway the while

Then consider awhile ere you leve me
Do not hasten to bid me adieu
But remember the red river valley
And the maiden whose heart beats for you

Then remember the valley your leaving
How lonely and dreary it will be
and remember the heart you are grieving
And be true to your promise to me

When you go to your home by the ocean
May you never forget the sweet hours
That we spent in the red river valley
Nor the vows we exchanged mid its flowers

Oh there never could be such a longing
In the heart of a white maidens breast
As there is in this heart that is breaking
With love for the boy who came west

And the dark maidens prayer for her lover
To the spirit that rules o’er the world
Is that sunshine his pathway may cover
Leave his grief to the red river girl

May I Sleep In Your Barn

The night it was dark and twas raning
When along came a tramp in the rain
He was making his way to some station
To catch out a long distance train

May I sleep in your barn tonight mister
It is cold lying out on the ground
and the cold north wind it is whistling
And I have no place to lie down

I have no tobacco nor matches
And Im sure that I’ll do you no harm
I will tell you my story kind mister
For it runs through my heart like a storm

It was three years ago last summer
I shall never forget that sad day
When a stranger came out from the city
And said that he wanted to stay

One day as I came home from my workshop
I was whistling and singing with joy
I expected a kind hearted welcome
From my sweet loving wife and my boy

But what should I find but a letter
It was placed in the room on the stand
And the moment my eyes fell upon it
I picked it right up in my hand

And this note said my wife and the strange
Had left and had taken my son
Oh I wonder if God up in Heaven
Only knows what that stranger has done

In A Garden In Paradise

In a garden in Paradise
Thats where my dreams come true
Happiness lingers in every place
And chases away the blues
I am dreaming always of you
All the day through loving and true
I am dreaming of a garden in Paradise

When Its Spring Time in The Rockies

The twilight shadows deepn into night dear
The city lights are gleaming on the snow
I sit alone beside the dreary fire dear
Im dreaming dreams from out the long ago
I fancy it is springtime in the mountains
The flowers with their colors are aflame
And every day I hear you softly singing
I’ll wait until the springtime comes again

When its springtime in the Rockies
I am coming back to you
Little Sweetheart of the mountains
With your bonny eyes of blue
Once again I’ll say I love you
While the birds sing all the day
When it’s springtime in the Rockies
In the Rockies far away

Ive kept your image guarded in my heart dear
I’ve kept my love for you as pure as dew
Im longing for the time when I shall come dear
Back to that dear old Western home and you
I fancy its springtime in the mounains
The maple leaves in first sky green appear
I hear you softly say my Queen of May time
This springtime you have come to meet me here

Oh Dem Golden Slippers

Oh my golden slippers am laid away
Cause I don’t spect to wear em till my weddin day
And my long tail’d coat dat I loved so well
I will wear up in the chariot in de morn
And my long white robe dat I bought last June
Ise gwine to get chang’d Case it fits too soon
And the ole gray hoss dat I used to drive
I will hitch him to the chariot in de morn

Oh dem golden slippers
Oh dem golden slippers
Golden slippers ise gwine to wear
Because they look so neat
Oh dem golden slippers
Oh dem golden slippers
Golden slippers ise gwine to wear
To walk the golden street

Oh my ole banjo hangs on de wall
Cause it ain’t been tuned since away last fall
But de darks all say we will have a good time
When we ride up in de chairot in the morn
And Brother Ben and sister Luce
Dey will telegraph to Uncle Bacco Juice
What a great camp meeting der will be dat day
When we ride up in de chariot in de morn

So its good-by children I will have to go
Wher der rain don’t fall or de wind don’t blow
And yer winter coat why ye will not need
When you ride up in de chariot in de morn
But dem slippers must be nice and clean
And yer age must be just sweet sixteen
And yer white [bed] gloves yer will have to wear
When you ride up in de chariot in de morn

When The Moon Comes Over The Mountain

All by myself at twilight
Watching the day depart
And with fading twilight
Happiness fills my heart

When the moon comes over the mountain
Every beam brings a dream dear of you
Once again well stroll by the founains
Through the rose covered valley we knew
Each day is gray and dreary
But the nights are bright and cheery
When the moon comes over the Mountain
Im alone with my memories of you

What do I care for sunshine
Blue skies are all in vain
I only hope that sometime
We two will meet again.

Down The River of Golden Dreams

When the weary day is near to its ending
When the world is longing to rest
Theres a happy day in dreams [on mending]
When the sun goes to the west

Down the river of golden dreams
Drifting along humming a song of love
Where the silver love moon beams
We’ll not be blue under the blue above
And when we find the rivers end
Where the willows bend
There our days we’ll spend together
Down the river of golden dreams
You and I under the sky of love

Some may dream of finding golden treasures
Some may dream of castles so high
I keep dreaming of a little journey
Someday we’ll go you and I

When Its Lamp Lighting Time In The Valley

There’s a lamp shining bright in a cabin
In the window it’s shining for me
I know my dear mother is praying
For the boy she is longing to see

When its lamp lighting time in the valley
And In dreams I go back to my home
I can see that old lamp in the window tonight
It will guide me wherever I roam

In the lamp light each night I can see her
As she rocks in her chair to and fro
Tho she prays that I’ll come back to see her
But I no that I never can go

As she lights up the lamp and sitts waiting
Though she knows not the crime I have done
Tho I hope to meet her again sometime
Up in Heaven where life’s race is won

When its lap lighting time in the valley
Then in dreams I go back to my home
But Ive sinned against my friends and my loved ones
And now I must ever more roam

Your As Welcome As The Flowers In May

Las night I dreamed a sweet sweet dream
I thought I saw my home sweet home
And oh how grand it all did seem
I made a vow no more to roam
By the dear old village church I strolled
While the bell in the steeple sadly told
I saw my Daddy old and gray
I thought I heard my Mother say

Your as welcom as the flowers in May
And we love you in the same old way
We’ve been waiting for you day by day
Your as welcome as the flowers in May

I thought I saw my sweetheart Bess
And once again we pledged our love
I listened to her low sweet yes
The moon was shinning from above
We talked of happy days of yore
And the day that I left my home heart sore
My thoughts are many mines away
I long to hear my Sweetheart say

When The Sun Goes Down Again

I hear a whippoorwill a cryin’
The sun is sinkin to rest
And I sit all alone a cryin’
Longing for the home I left way out in the West
Ill never learn to be a roamer
No matter how I try
And when the next train leaves this town
I’ll tell you all Good-bye

When the sun goes down again
Im going to be where I belong
I’ll be comin around the bend
And in my heart there’ll be a song
It won’t take long to forget
That I ever wanted to roam
And unless I miss my guess
I’ll learn each word of Home Sweet Home
When I hear my old dog beggin
I’ll be at my journey’s end
I can hear the old folks sayin
Welcome home our long lost friend
I’ll throw away my walkin shoes
I never want them on again
I’ll lay my head on a feather bed
When the sun goes down again
