When The Works All Done This Fall

A group of jolly cowboys discusing plans at ease
Says one I’ll tell you something boys if you will listen please
I am an old cow puncher and tho here Im dressed in rags
I used to be a tough one and take on great big jogs
But Ive got a home boys a good one you all know
Although I haven’t seen it since very long ago
But Im going back to [Dixie] once more to see them all
I’m going to see my mother when the works all done this fall

After the round ups over after the shippings done
Im going straight home boys ere all my moneys gone
Ive changed my ways boys no more will I fall
And Im going home to mother when the works all done this fall
When I left my home boys my mother for me cried
She begged me not to go boys for me she would have died
Mothers heart is breaking its breaking for me thats all
So Im going to see my mother when the works all done this fall

That very night this cowboy went out to stand his guard
The weather it was strong and raining very hard
The cattle they got frightened and rushed a wild stampede
The cowboy tried to herd them while riding at full speed
While riding in the darkness so loudly he did shout
The saddle horse did stumble and on him did fall
And he’ll not see his mother when the works done this fall

His body was so mangled
The boys all through him dead
They picked him up so gently and laid him on his bed
He opened wide his blue eyes and looking all around
He motioned to his comrads to sit near him on the ground
Boys send my mother my wages the wages I have earned
For Im afraid boys my last star that I have turned
Im going to a new range I hear my masters call
And I’ll not see my mother when the works all done this fall

Joe take my saddle Bill you take my bed
Pete you take my pistol after I am dead
Think of them kindly as you gaze up on them all
And give my love to mother when the works all done next fall
Poor Charlie was burried at sunrise no toombstone at his head
Nothing but a little board and this is what it said
Poor Charlie died at daybreak he died from a fall
And he’ll not see his mother when the works all done this fall

A Gangster’s Warning

I was brought up by kind parents
I once was their pride and joy
I got to drinking and gambling
Wild life got the best of their boy
Some pals took me out on a robbery
I thought just for once would be fun
But one crime led to another
Till it led to the use of a gun

In my pocket I carry a pistol
Its never away from my side
The notches thats carved in the handle
Tell how more than one man has died
Im leading a trail that is crooked
My foul lay around every den
I no that some day this will get me
I dread to think of the end

It seems there’s no hope for a gangster
Not a moment of peace to be found
Wherever I go I am hunted
LIke a fox that is chased by a hound
Its true I would like to be honest
But I know its too late to begin
For when you join with a ganster
Its a game that is played to the end

I wish I had listened to mother
She said there would be days like this
I lost all my true friends and sweethearts
No more shall I know their sweet bliss
So young men keep way from that company
Thats how I troded in wrong
And don’t let your pals try to kid your
Remember the words of this song.

Overdue For Death

Im a cowboy bold so Ive been told
Im a good for nothing gent
And drink and smoke Im always broke
Im a ridin fool hell-bent

With my flaming gun I kill for fun
And I swear with every breath
Ive escaped from jail, their on my trail
And Im overdue for death

Oh I dine on rocks and I don’t wear socks
And there is whiskey on my breath
with my gun and knife I welcome strife
Cause Im overdue for death!”

Oh the horse I ride is six feet wide
And my ropes are rattlesnake
And its cockleburs I use for my spurs
As the hell bound trail I take

Oh my foes I pat without a shot
For I blast them with my breath
And Im killin thirst and shootin first
Cause Im overdue for death

Im a blast from hell a shrieken yell
Of hate from the devils den
With snake and fire i roar my ire
Im a scarage to the souls of men

Oh my eyes flash flame so many claim
And there’s poison in my breath
And I laugh with glee at misery
Cause Im overdue for death

Im a wadly wild no angel child
Im a wrangler full of sin
And where other gents end the suspense
Is the place where I begin

Im a roarin bear and I don’t care
How I waste my precious breath
For Im leavin soon oh hear my time
For Im overdue for death

Oh I eat raw meat drink poision neat
And I sleep on broken glass
And its safe to say I have my way
For I won’t take any sass

Ive liven in strife throughout my life
But Im goin to be a dove
And bill and coo the whole day through
Cause Im overdue for [death] love
