The Dying Nun

Let the air blow in upon me
Let me see the midnight sky
Stand back sisters from around me
Oh it is so hard to die
Raise the pillow up dear Martha
Sister Martha you are kind
Come and stand just here beside me
Ere I leave you all behind

Hold my hand so cold and frozen
Once it was so softa and white
And the ring that falls down from it
Clasped my fingers round so tight
Little ring they thought so worthless
That they let me keep it there
Only a plain and golden circle
And A braid of Douglas hair

Oh my Father Oh my mother
Will you not forget the past
When you hear some stranger tell you
How your stray lamb died at last
Out of all that used to love me
Who will weep when I am dead
Only you dear sister Marthat
Keep the last watch by my bed

Sister Martha are you near me
You are kinder than the rest
Lift my head and let me lean it
While I live upon your breast
I am Coming Douglas coming
Where you are I’ll soon be there
Free at last I come my dearest
Death gives back your little Claire

Sister Martha Sister Martha
Has the moon gone down so soon
Oh this cell is cold as winter
Tho I know tis only June
Sister in your white bed lying
Sleeping in the June moonlight
Through your dreams there comes no message
Claire dies all alone tonight

Wreck of the Number 9

On a cold winter night
Not a star was in sight
And the north wind came howling down the line
With his sweetheart so dear
Stood a brave engineer
With his orders to pull out No 9

She kissed him good-bye
With a tear in her eye
And the joy in his heart he could not hide
For the whole world seemed bright
When she told him that night
That tomorrow she would be his blushing bride

The wheels hummed a song
As the train rolled along
And the black smoke came pouring from the stack
The headlight a gleem
Seemed to brighten his dream
Of tomorrow when he’d be coming back

He sped round the hill
and his brave heart stood still
For a headlight was beaming in his face
And he murmered a prayer
As he threw on the air
For he knew that he had ran his final race

In the wreck he was found
Lying there on the ground
And he asked them to raise his weary head
As his breath slowly went
This message he sent
To the maiden who thought she would be wed

There’s a little white home
That I bought for our own
Where I dreamed we would be happy by and by
But I leave it to you
For I know that you’ll be true
Till we meet at the golden gate Go0d-Bye

Oh Dem Golden Slippers

Oh my golden slippers am laid away
Cause I don’t spect to wear em till my weddin day
And my long tail’d coat dat I loved so well
I will wear up in the chariot in de morn
And my long white robe dat I bought last June
Ise gwine to get chang’d Case it fits too soon
And the ole gray hoss dat I used to drive
I will hitch him to the chariot in de morn

Oh dem golden slippers
Oh dem golden slippers
Golden slippers ise gwine to wear
Because they look so neat
Oh dem golden slippers
Oh dem golden slippers
Golden slippers ise gwine to wear
To walk the golden street

Oh my ole banjo hangs on de wall
Cause it ain’t been tuned since away last fall
But de darks all say we will have a good time
When we ride up in de chairot in the morn
And Brother Ben and sister Luce
Dey will telegraph to Uncle Bacco Juice
What a great camp meeting der will be dat day
When we ride up in de chariot in de morn

So its good-by children I will have to go
Wher der rain don’t fall or de wind don’t blow
And yer winter coat why ye will not need
When you ride up in de chariot in de morn
But dem slippers must be nice and clean
And yer age must be just sweet sixteen
And yer white [bed] gloves yer will have to wear
When you ride up in de chariot in de morn

Silver Threads Among The Gold

Darling I am growing old
Silver threads among the gold
shine upon my brow today
Life is fading fast away
but my darling you will be will be
Always young and fair to me
Yes my darling you will be
Always young and fair to me

Darling I am growing old
Silver threads among the gold
Shine upon my brow today
Life is fading fast away

When your hair is silver white
And your cheeks no longer bright
With the roses of the may
I will kiss your kips and say
Oh my darling mine alone alone
You have never older grown
Yes my darling mine alone
You have never older grown

Love can never more grow old
Locks may lose their brown and gold
Cheeks may fade and hollow grow
But the hearts that love will know
Never never winters frost and chill
Summer warmth is in them still
Never winters frost and chill
Summer warmth is in them still

Love is always young and fair
What to us is silver hair
Faded cheeks or steps grown slow
To the hearts that heat below
Since I kissed you mine alone alone
You have never older grown
Since I kissed you mine alone
You have never older grown
